Myanmar former speaker of lower house elected as new president

U Win Myint, former Speaker of the House of Representatives, was elected as Myanmar’s new president in the presidential run on March 28, the Myanmar Union Parliament announced.

Hanoi (VNA) – U Win Myint, former Speaker of the House of Representatives,was elected as Myanmar’s new president in the presidential run on March 28, theMyanmar Union Parliament announced.

UWin Myint became the country’s 10th president since 1948.

UWin Myint, 66, won the election with 403 “yes” votes as a total of 636 MPs casttheir votes in the Union Parliament.

Heused to work as a lawyer. In 2012, U Win Myint, a member of the National Leaguefor Democracy (NLD), was elected as a parliament member to the House ofRepresentatives.

Hebecame Speaker of the House of Representatives in 2016.

Thepresidential run was hosted by the Union Parliament to fill the presidencyvacancy left by U Htin Kyaw, who announced resignation last week, citing healthas reason.-VNA
