Hanoi (VNA) - Myanmar State Counselor Aung San Suu Kyi made her first visit to the country’s northern state of Rakhine, where conflicts forced many Rohingya Muslims to run to neighbouring Bangladesh.

She visited Sittwe, Maungdaw and Buthiduang villages during her one-day trip, in which the two latters are the conflict-battered areas of the state, said U Zaw Htay, Spokesman of the Myanmar Government.

Myanmar leaders prioritised three main tasks to be done in Rakhine – repatriating refugees who have crossed over to Bangladesh and providing humanitarian assistance effectively; resettlement and rehabilitation; bringing development to the region and establishing lasting peace.

The Government has launched projects to reestablish peace and stability in the state after Aung San Suu Kyi called for the formation of the Union Enterprises for Humanitarian Assistance, Resettlement and Development (UEHRD) in Rakhine.

Accordingly, relevant ministries and bodies have implemented priority projects in a wide range of fields.

Violence flared up in Rakhine state since gunmen attacked 24 police posts and broke into a military outpost in Rakhine on August 25.

To date, at least 110 people have been killed. Over 600,000 Rohingya people, mainly women and children, have sought ways to flee into Bangladesh.-VNA
