Hanoi (VNA) – Thousands of people in Myanmar marched in Yangon city onOctober 29 to support the country’s military, which has come under criticism forits heavy handedness in dealing with Rohingya Muslims.
Morethan 2,000 army supporters, including Buddhist nationalists and monks, tookpart in the march. A senior Buddhist nationalist monk was quoted by foreignmedia as saying that only if the military is strengthened will Myanmar’ssovereignty be secured.
Aseries of attacks on police outposts were launched in northern Rakhine state inAugust, which the Myanmar Government said was carried out by a Rohingyainsurgent group.
About600,000 Rohingya people fled the northern state for the neighbouring country ofBangladesh after Myanmar’s forces began a security campaign in Rakhine afterthe attacks.-VNA
