Myanmar’s parliament voted in favour of several sub-sections under Section 436 (b) of the 2008 constitution amendment bill on July 8, agreeing to increase power to state and regional governments.
The sub-sections focus on defining power-sharing between central, state and regional governments in terms of executives, taxation and resources.
Meanwhile, the sub-section allowing the parliament to appoint leaders of state or regional units was voted down.
On June 25, Myanmar’s parliament rejected most of the constitutional amendments that did not receive a minimum of 75 percent of votes.
The constitution of Myanmar was published in 2008, consisting of 15 chapters spreading over 194 pages and serving as a foundation for the general election in November 2010.-VNA
