National Assembly Vice Chairwoman Nguyen Thi Kim Ngan has been presented a humanitarian award from the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) in recognition of her efforts in reducing the child mortality rate in Vietnam.
UNICEF Chief Representative in Vietnam Lotta Sylwander presented the award to the NA leader at a ceremony in Hanoi on February 27.
Speaking highly of the assistance given by UNICEF to improve child care and protection in Vietnam, Ngan said she hopes the fund will further its important role in coordinating with other UN organisations to continue supporting Vietnam in the field.
She stressed Vietnam always attaches importance to caring for and protecting children and considers this one of the country’s key policies.
Lotta Sylwander praised the NA Vice Chairwoman for her contributions to promoting the enforcement of child rights over the past time, expressing her hope that Ngan will further contribute to the field in the future.
Vietnam has reaped remarkable achievements in ensuring the rights of children. The mortality rate of kids in the country dropped to 1.6 percent in 2010 from 3.67 percent one decade earlier.-VNA
