Twenty six individuals and collectives told stories that earned them an honour of being role models in the nation’s construction and defence cause during a televised programme in Hanoi on July 13.
Themed “Difficulties surmounted to move forward”, the tenth “Vietnam Glory” programme was organised by the Vietnam General Confederation of Labour, Lao Dong (Labour) newspaper, the Central Committee for Emulation and Awards and the Vietnam Television. It was broadcast live on VTV1 channel.
The audience heard the story told by Le Van Duoc, a ninth grade student from Thanh Chuong district, central Nghe An province, who bravely saved five fellow pupils from drowning.
On June 17 when the five female pupils were catching mussels at the Gang River in Thanh Ngoc commune, Thanh Chuong district, they tumbled down deep waters and exhausted. Duoc came just on time to save the girls.
The 15-year-old boy’s courage and selflessness is a good example to teenagers nationwide.
Colonel Nguyen Dang Giap, Director General of Corporation 36 under the Defence Ministry, showed that bold initiatives in management and operation could help his company reap fruits.
Colonel Giap was once honoured in the ninth “Vietnam Glory” programme and his Corporation 36 was awarded the “Labour Hero” title last year.
The Authority of Radio Frequency Management was praised for its contribution to securing spatial positions for the country’s Vinasat-1, Vinasat-2 and VNRedsat-1 satellite, which have played an important part in the country’s socio-economic development and security-defence protection.
First initiated by Lao Dong newspaper in 2003, the “Vietnam Glory” programme has become a special cultural and political event to acknowledge and honour Labour heroes in the Renewal process, Heroes of the People’s Armed Forces, businesspeople and role-models in patriotic movements.
Addressing the event, Vice President Nguyen Thi Doan praised the awardees for showing a high degree of responsibility to community and expressed her hope that these role models and the programme itself will generate greater impacts on society to encourage more people to follow suit.-VNA
