The development of 2G-4G technology and multimedia broadband services for the international mobile telecommunications (IMT) system were discussed at an International Telecommunications Union (ITU) regional workshop in the central coastal city of Da Nang on June 7.

At the two-day workshop on IMT in the Asia-Pacific region, the Vietnamese representatives spoke of the challenges the country faces in developing its broadband wireless communications network.

The workshop also highlighted the contributions made by the working party 5D, to standardising the frequency for the IMT system on a global scale.

Over the past 20 years, the ITU, aided by several governments, has helped to develop the IMT system, said the workshop, adding that the IMT-2000 or 3G was first introduced to the world in 2000.

In 2009, Vietnam ’s Ministry of Information and Communications granted four operating licences to five businesses in 3G technology services.

The IMT-Advanced or 4G, is expected to provide users with broadband multimedia services, hi-speed data access and other new generation mobile communication services, said the workshop./.
