The main opposition Democratic Party of Japan (DPJ) has scored a landslide victory in a hotly contested general election, sweeping the ruling Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) from power for only the second time in its 54-year history, said Kyodo News.

The August 30 historic victory, which gave the DPJ 308 seats in the 480-member powerful House of Representatives, will enable DPJ President Yukio Hatoyama to become the new prime minister.

Before the election, the LDP and New Komeito Party had a combined 331 seats with 31 for New Komeito, a two-thirds majority that enabled them to ram through legislation, while the DPJ held 115.

However, according to the final results, the LDP gained 119 seats and New Komeito, 21 seats. The three other opposition parties including the Social Democratic Party (SDP), the People's New Party and the Japanese Communist Party, obtained seven, three and nine seats, respectively.

The DPJ is expected to launch an official transition team after deciding on key positions in the Cabinet, including chief Cabinet secretary and State minister in charge of overseeing its planned policy making unit, the National Strategy Bureau (NSB).

The new ruling partly also plans to hold negotiations with members of its two opposition allies - the Social Democratic Party and the People's New Party on establishing a coalition government./.
