Inward remittances via HCM City banks in the first five months of the year topped 1.7 billion USD , an increase of more than 32 percent compared to the same period last year.

According to the State Bank of Vietnam in HCM City , in April and May, overseas remittance transferred to the city was more than 700 million USD.

The recovery of the world economy as well as better growth of Vietnam's economy have opened up more business opportunities in Vietnam, with more and more overseas Vietnamese transferring money to invest in their homeland.

In addition, the increasing number of Vietnamese people going abroad for work has helped increase the amount of overseas remittance, the bank added.

The supply and demand of US dollars has been rather balanced in the past time, it said.

Banks said amounts of US dollars from remittances sold to the bank had been bigger than before as the dollar price at banks now was equal to the price on the open market./.
