Jakarta(VNA) – Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong arrived at the Soekarno-Hattaairport in Jakarta on August 22, beginning a three-day official visit toIndonesia at the invitation of President Joko Widodo.

The Party leader waswelcomed at the airport by Indonesian Minister of Commerce Engatiato Lukita,Co-Chair of the Indonesia-Vietnam Joint Committee on economic, science,technology cooperation and other Indonesian officials, as well as VietnameseAmbassador to Indonesia Hoang Anh Tuan, among others.

This is the firstvisit of a General Secretary of the Communist Party of Vietnam to Indonesia,and the first made by a senior leader of Vietnam since the two countries set uptheir strategic partnership in June 2013.

Vietnam is the onlyASEAN country Indonesia has a strategic partnership with.

In recent years,two-way trade has grown well. Import-export turnover increased from 4.6 billionUSD in 2012 to 5.6 billion USD in 2016 with average growth of 5 percent. Thetwo countries are striving for 10 billion USD in bilateral trade by 2018.

As of April,Indonesia ranked fifth in ASEAN and 30th among the 105 nations and territoriesinvesting in Vietnam, with 59 projects, mainly in oil and gas exploration andexploitation, coal mining, banking and timber processing. Vietnam has investedin seven projects involving mining, retailing, repair and communication inIndonesia.

Vietnam and Indonesiaare also stepping up collaboration in defence and security by maintaining ajoint naval working group and establishing a hotline to share information onsearch and rescue activities-VNA

Party General Secretary To Lam holds phone talks with US senators

Vietnam and the US should maintain stable and sustainable economic, trade, and investment ties, and the US Congress should continue allocating resources to assist Vietnam in addressing war legacy issues, particularly the dioxin remediation project at Bien Hoa Airport, unexploded ordnance clearance, support for persons with disabilities and war victims, and enhanced assistance in searching for, recovering, and identifying missing Vietnamese soldiers.

As a founding member, Vietnam wishes to work with other members to promote the role of the Gaza Board of Peace in advancing peace and reconstruction in Gaza on the basis of resolutions of the UN Security Council, ensuring the legitimate interests of all parties, especially the Palestinian people, in accordance with international law and the UN Charter.
