Hanoi (VNA) – Former Philippine President Gloria Arroyo, on July 21, was freed after nearly five years in detention at a military hospital near the capital Manila.
Earlier, on July 19, the country’s Supreme Court dismissed a embezzlement case against her due to a lack of evidence.
Arroyo, 69, was charged with embezzlement in connection with 366 million PHP (8.8 million USD) in state lottery funds.
New Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte, who took office on June 30, had said he was willing to grant amnesty to her.-VNA
