Hanoi (VNA) - Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has restored the Visiting Forces Agreement (VFA) with the United States, Philippine Defence Secretary Delfin Lorenzana announced on July 30.

He said Duterte made the decision after meeting with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, who is in the Philippines for a visit from July 29 to 30.

The Philippines and the US signed the VFA in 1998, allowing joint Philippine-US military operations. The Philippine Senate ratified the agreement in 1999, seven years after the closure of the last US base on Philippine territory.

In February 2020, the Philippines officially notified the US about the termination of the agreement.

In June 2020, the country suspended the decision to scrap the two-decade-old agreement. The decision was suspended again in November that year./.
