The southern central coastal province of Phu Yen aims to have at least 20 communes recognised as modern rural areas, said Chairman of the provincial People’s Committee Pham Dinh Cu.

During a working session with Auditor General of the State Audit Office of Vietnam Nguyen Huu Van on the implementation of the national target programme on building new-style rural areas in the province on July 31, Cu said the province will focus its investments on developing infrastructure facilities and restructuring the agricultural sector.

Local authorities also called for doubled annual funding for the province with some 100 billion VND (4.67 million USD) sourced from Government bonds and between 150-200 billion VND (6.9 - 9.3 million USD) from the official development assistance (ODA) sources.

Auditor General Van hailed the province’s remarkable achievements in building local modern rural areas.

He suggested the locality focus on the basic criteria of planning, transport, irrigation, schools, and healthcare to create positive momentum for the other criteria.

Over the past five years, Phu Yen has mobilised nearly 22.48 billion VND (1.05 billion USD) for the modern rural area building programme targeting 88 communes across the province.

So far, two have met all 19 criteria of the programme, Binh Kien commune in Tuy Hoa town and Hoa Tan Dong commune in Dong Hoa district. The rest have satisfied an average of 11 criteria.

All 88 communes are connected to the electricity grid and half have fulfilled rural road system requirements with more than 1,582 kilometres of rural roads improved in the past three years.

The national target programme on building new-style rural areas, initiated by the Government, sets 19 criteria to boost rural regions nationwide.

The list includes infrastructure development, production capacity improvement, environmental protection and cultural values promotion.-VNA
