PM advocates Vietnam’s responsible involvement in ASEAN

In the speech, broadcast on national TV on Aug. 7, PM Dung sent his best regards to the governments and peoples of member countries in the family of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) and its partners, saying that Vietnam advocates joining ASEAN cooperation in a “positive, active and responsible” spirit for the sake of peace, stability and development in the region and the world.
Looking back on the bloc’s history, the PM emphasised that over the past 42 years of development and overcoming difficulties, ASEAN today is a strong association of solidarity, a common house for the Southeast Asian peoples and has become a comprehensive organisation for cooperation, and a dynamical political-economic entity playing an important role in the region and the world.
Vietnam has long considered cooperation in the Southeast Asian region and ASEAN as an important part of Vietnam’s external policy, which is one of independence, self-sovereignty, diversity, multi-lateralisation and neighbourly friendship, he affirmed.
The assumption of the rotating ASEAN Presidency in 2010, the PM affirmed, is viewed by Vietnam as both a great honour and an important responsibility.
Vietnam is actively preparing for all aspects of its upcoming leadership, and stands ready to fulfil its duties with the highest degree of determination, the PM said. He added that through its performance as president, Vietnam will demonstrate the country’s crucial role in the region, and the continuing contributions it makes for solidarity, cooperation and development in the bloc as well as effective cooperation with other partners around the world./.
