Many countries, organisations and scholars from across the world have spoken highly of Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung’s keynote speech at the opening ceremony of the 12 th Shangri-La Dialogue.

Participating delegations at the annual security forum held in Singapore from May 31 to June 2 appreciated the forthrightness, transparency and responsibility the PM expressed during his speech.

The US delegation said the Vietnamese leader’s speech is not only transparent and clear but harmoniously satisfies the interest of all countries and straightly fights against any signs that may be the cause of challenges and risks to regional security.

US scholars were impressed with the idea of building strategic trust among countries that PM Dung spoke of during his address.

In an interview with a New York-based Vietnam News Agency correspondent, Andrew Billo, an Assistant Director at the Asia Society’s New York headquarters, said he agreed with the PM’s viewpoint, which emphasised strategic trust for peace, cooperation and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region.

He also shared the view on the role of powers for peace and stability in the region and that every strategy and activity made by powers towards the region must comply with international law and respect the independence and sovereignty of other countries.

Regarding Vietnam ’s decision to join UN peace-keeping operations, Billo said the country plays an increasingly important role in the international arena. He noted that Vietnam is ready not only to get involved in issues that bring direct benefits to it, but is also ready to play a greater role in solving global challenges.

That Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung was invited to make the keynote speech at the dialogue demonstrates Singaporean Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong’s respect for the country, which plays an increasingly important role not only in the region but in the world, Russia ’s political magazine “Multipolar World” said in an article written by its Editor-in-chief Boris Vinogradov on June 1.

Russia and other political centres have given special attention to PM Dung’s address, the article noted.

Magazine “Eurasia Review” also posted an article by Dr. Subhash Kapila, from India-based South Asia Analysis Group (SAAG), saying that the theme “Building strategic trust for peace, cooperation and prosperity in the Asia-Pacific region” is well chosen and a timely reminder for regional countries.

The International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS), a leading research facility in the world and the organiser of the event, also posted a commentary on PM Dung’s keynote speech.-VNA
