Prime Minister Nguyen Tan Dung has urged Lam Dong province to continue tapping its advantages in terms of climate and natural resources to promote the agriculture, forestry, aquaculture, tourism, services and mineral processing industries to ensure sustainable development.

During his tour of the Central Highlands province on Aug. 18 and 19, PM Dung met with key local officials, hailing the province’s efforts in approaching the 2006-2010 socio-economic targets in this year.

The province strives for a 12.5-13.5 percent growth in GDP, a per capita income of 16.5 million VND, and a rate of poor households under 8.5 percent.

In the first seven months of this year, the province’s GDP growth was 10.7 percent, and exports rose 11 percent.

The Government is willing to allocate capital in advance for the implementation of urgent projects, Dung said, asking the province create all necessary conditions to attract investment, particularly in tourism.

The province needs to quickly apply science and technology and improve the quality of development in high-tech agriculture, such as flowers, vegetables, fruit, tea, coffee and cold-water fishing.

Blessed with a temperate climate and abundant natural resources, Lam Dong should focus investment on turning the tourism and services sectors into its flagship industries, Dung said.

Otherwise, the province needs to focus on the development of a forestry-driven economy, which, he said, would help the province to reduce its poverty rate and improve the living conditions of ethnic minority groups. The province’s rate of poor households is now at 29 percent.

He also instructed Lam Dong to continue its investment in the areas where ethnic minorities live, poverty reduction, vocational training and anti-disease programmes, as well as facilities for the new academic year.

Regarding its bauxite potential, the PM asked the provincial People’s Committee to work together with the Vietnam Coal-Mineral Industries Group to carry out the Lam Dong bauxite mining and aluminium industry integrated project to ensure economic strength, environmental protection and sustainable development for the Central Highlands .

Also on the same day, PM Dung visited the Da Lat Bishop’s Office./.
