Hanoi (VNA) – Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh’s trip to Brazil and attendance at the G20 Summit, and his official visit to the Dominican Republic, were a success, demonstrating Vietnam's role, reputation, and responsible contributions to global issues, and creating new momentum for further strengthening bilateral relations between Vietnam and the two Latin American nations, said Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs Pham Thanh Binh.
In an interview granted to the press, Binh highlighted the Vietnamese high-ranking delegation’s contributions to the G20 Summit in Rio de Janeiro, saying that PM Chinh and his entourage actively participated in all official activities of the meeting.
Vietnam makes positive contributions to G20 Summit
The PM delivered two important speeches at debates themed “The fight against poverty" and "Sustainable development and energy transition". He also engaged in 35 bilateral meetings with leaders of nations and international organisations on the sidelines of the summit. These intensive, proactive, and effective activities vividly portrayed Vietnam as a dynamic, open country that is "a friend, a reliable partner, and a responsible member of the international community," contributing to the overall success of the G20 Summit 2024.
Binh said that Vietnam's participation in and contributions to this summit conveyed three key messages:
Firstly, Vietnam is an independent, confident, and self-reliant country. PM Chinh underlined the importance of people-centred, comprehensive and global approaches to promote peace and stability as a foundation for poverty eradication, sustainable development, and energy transition, conveying a strong message about Vietnam's readiness to contribute to global efforts with its capabilities, experience, and long-term vision.
Secondly, Vietnam is a reliable multilateral partner. PM Chinh underscored the importance of multilateralism and international solidarity. He also emphasised the idea of taking people at the centre, as the subject, the goal, the driving force, and the important resource for sustainable development, affirming that with this approach, Vietnam stands ready to collaborate with the G20 and the international community in pursuing the noble goal of building a better world.
Thirdly, Vietnam is a highly responsible member of the international community, actively contributing to global efforts. Vietnam's participation as a founding member of the Global Alliance against Hunger and Poverty, initiated by the host nation - Brazil, demonstrates the Southeast Asian country’s commitment to sharing its experience in poverty alleviation, which enabled it to achieve the UN Millennium Development Goals a decade ahead of schedule.
On this occasion, PM Chinh responded to the G20 members' call for action on global institutional reform to build a fairer global institution, rapidly adapt to world fluctuations and enhance the representation of developing countries.
Vietnam seeks stronger ties with Brazil, Dominican Republic
The Deputy FM also spotlighted the significance of the talks between PM Chinh and Brazilian President Brazil Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, and the joint statement on elevating the bilateral relations to a Strategic Partnership between Vietnam and Brazil.
The talks provided a chance for the two sides to review the fruitful development of the friendship and cooperation, and the implementation of high-level agreements reached during PM Chinh’s official visit to Brazil in September 2023, thus agreeing on major orientations and measures to further foster the bilateral relations in the future, Binh said.
The elevation of the Vietnam-Brazil relations to the Strategic Partnership holds particularly significant importance, he stressed.
It reaffirms the high level of political trust between the two countries, demonstrating the two governments' determination to expand avenues for cooperation, towards fostering deeper, more substantive, stable, and sustainable relations, bringing tangible benefits to their people, and contributing to peace, stability, and development in their respective regions, and the world.
The establishment of the Strategic Partnership with Brazil marks a significant milestone in Vietnam's efforts to expand cooperation with Latin America - a region with immense potential, especially as Vietnam intensifies diversification of markets and supply sources.
The new framework of relations will serve as a foundation for close cooperation between Vietnam and Brazil on international issues such as poverty alleviation, sustainable development, climate change response, and strengthening ties between ASEAN and South America. It also stands as a strong testament to Vietnam's commitment to deepening relations with global partners while affirming its increasingly elevated position within the international community, Binh said.
The PM’s attendance at a series of meaningful activities in Brazil clearly showed Vietnam's desire to strengthen its relationship with the Latin American nation across various fields, from economy, trade, investment, to culture, tourism, and people-to-people exchanges, the official noted.
Binh also highlighted the results of PM Chinh's official visit to the Dominican Republic, saying that the trip demonstrated that Vietnam attaches importance to and desires to further strengthen and deepen the solidarity, friendship, and cooperation with the Caribbean nation.
The Vietnamese leader held important and highly productive talks with President Luis Abinader Corona, during which the two sides issued a joint statement reaffirming the commitment of the two governments, and outlining agreed-upon directions and measures, to further step up the bilateral relations in the future.
The outcomes of the trip are expected to usher in a new phase in the relationship between the two countries, fostering momentum to expand and deepen multi-faceted cooperation, effectively contributing to the development of both nations, and bringing peace, stability, and cooperation to the two regions and the world, Binh said.
PM Chinh has suggested the two sides soon launch negotiations on a free trade agreement, an investment protection agreement, as well as promote collaboration in culture, education - training, and the mutual exemption of ordinary visas, the official added./.
