Polluters of Buoi River fined

Businesses in the northern province of Hoa Binh have received administrative punishments for polluting the Buoi River under a decision issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

Hanoi (VNA) – Three businesses in the northern mountainous province of Hoa Binh have received administrative punishments for polluting the Buoi River under a decision issued by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment.

They are Tan Hieu Hung Co., Ltd specialising in cassava processing and export, Hoa Binh Sugarcane and Sugar JSC, and Nguyen Ngoc Sang pig rearing facility, together will be fined more than 3.9 billion VND (176,000 USD) in total.

The businesses have been charged with discharging untreated solid waste and wastewater to the Buoi River illegally, causing pollution in the river.

Accordingly, Tan Hieu Hung Co., Ltd, based in Tan My commune, Lac Son district, has to pay close to 1.93 billion VND (87,000 USD), stop such violations and redress the consequences by upgrading its wastewater treatment system and recording its operation, which must be completed before September 30, 2016.

The company was required to submit its repairing plan as well as construction dossier to the provincial Department of Natural Resources and Environment no later than June 20, 2016.

Hoa Binh Sugarcane and Sugar JSC in Tan My commune will be fined nearly 1.8 billion VND (81,000 USD) and suspended for six months, starting from May 20, 2016.

Apart from taking actions similar to Tan Hieu Hung’s to correct its mistakes, the company will have to compensate organisations and individuals affected by the pollution.

Nguyen Ngoc Sang, owner of a pig rearing facility in Tan My commune, has to pay more than 195 million VND (8,800 USD) and stop the release of wastewater to the river for three months since the day when he receives the decision. Sang was also required to do the same things as the two aforesaid violators.

More than 17 tonnes of fish raised in cages in Thach Thanh district, the northern province of Thanh Hoa, have died due to contaminated water, Voice of Vietnam (VOV) reported.

The dead fish, belonging to households in the district’s communes of Thach Lam, Thach Quang, Thanh My and Thanh Vinh, were found from May 4-7, according to local authorities.

Investigations showed that a huge amount of wastewater released from the businesses in the upstream caused the mass fish deaths.-VNA

Vietnam launches 13 mln USD project to phase out ozone-depleting substances
