Bangkok (VNA) – Thai Foreign Minister Maris Sangiampongsa and Lao Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Saleumxay Kommasith recently held phone talks, stressing stronger cooperation to improve their countries’ capacities in mitigating impacts of natural disasters.
During their conversation on September 20, the two officials underlined the importance of closer bilateral cooperation and the full utilisation of various Mekong cooperation frameworks to enhance their capacities in mitigating the impacts of future disasters and sustainably managing shared water resources.
They also exchanged condolences and sympathy for the recent floods affecting both countries.
Over recent days, many places in Thailand’s northeastern provinces of Nong Khai and Nakhon Phanom have been inundated as the Mekong River is in full spate, forcing business suspension and evacuation.
In Laos, the Mekong River’s water level has also risen fast, disturbing the daily life of residents in the vicinity. Many areas in this country have been isolated by floods./.
