Press agencies play an important role in better ensuring the implementation of human rights in Vietnam , Deputy Foreign Minister Bui Thanh Son has said.
At a two-day seminar on International Human Rights Conventions and Implementing Mechanism, which wrapped up in Hanoi on Dec. 23, the deputy FM also said that the initiatives of mass media in the popularisation of human rights conventions in Vietnam will help people at home and abroad better understand on the Southeast Asia country’s achievements, commitments, challenges and action plans.
Australian Deputy Ambassador to Vietnam Vanessa Wood said despite the fact that Vietnam has ratified major international human rights treaties, the country is facing a big challenge in the wide popularisation of the contents of treaties to the public and governmental officials.
This creates difficulties in the implementation of human rights treaties in Vietnam , she said, highlighting the important role of mass media in the issue.
In her presentation, Deputy Head of the Press Department under the Foreign Ministry Le Thi Thu Hang affirmed that the duty of promoting and protecting human rights is not of any individual, but also the whole society, including mass media. Press not only provides information but also orient the public opinions, she said.
One of the important tasks mass media has done is to popularise and improve people’s awareness on human rights, helping them understand their rights and how they are protected by the laws.
Besides, press agencies have made contributions to fighting against false information and wrong opinions on the implementation of democracy and human rights in Vietnam , she said.
Vietnam has ratified five major UN treaties on human rights, including the International Convention on Civil and Political Rights, the International Convention on Economic, Social and Cultural Rights, the International Convention on Elimination of Racial Discrimination, the International Convention on Elimination of Discrimination against Women and the International Convention on the Rights of Children./.
