Quang Tri restores marine resources in Con Co island

The central province of Quang Tri is pushing efforts to preserve and restore marine resources in the Con Co Island Marine Reserve.

Quang Tri (VNA) – The central province of QuangTri is pushing efforts to preserve and restore marine resources in the Con CoIsland Marine Reserve.

The province has established volunteer groups to protect seaturtle, operating in not only Con Co island but also coastal communes.

Since 2017 to now, local residents have released into thesea 15 sea turtles.

Under a research project on restoring coral reefs in thereserve, conducted by the reserve’s management board and the Research Institutefor Marine Fisheries since 2011, scientists planted 360 coral colonies with asurvival rate of 71 percent. Some colonies have grown to cover part of theseabed.
The area of newly-formed coral reefs has been zoned off forprotection. Other types of coral also revived in the area.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture andRural Development, other research projects have also been launched to evaluateand study ecological diversity and marine resources in the reserve.

Local agencies are collecting samples to build a collectionof rare and precious sea animals and plants typical of Con Co island.

Con Co  Island Marine Reserve was established under Quang Tri provincial People’sCommittee Decision No. 2090 dated October 14, 2009, and became operational onApril 21, 2010.   

It aims to improve localresidents’ awareness of biodiversity, marine resources, as well as themanagement, protection and sustainable development of those resources.   

The reserve covers 4,532hectares, including three subregions - namely a 534 ha protected subregion, a1,392 ha subregion for ecological recovery and a 2,376 ha subregion fordevelopment.   

In terms of biodiversity, thereserve now boasts 113 coral species, 57 species of seaweed and seagrass, 67zoobenthos species, 19 crustacean species, 224 species of saltwater fish, 87species of coral reef fish, 164 phytoplankton species and 68 species and groupsof zooplankton. Of which, numerous species are rare and have high economicvalue such as lobster, sea cucumbers, Asian green mussels, mackerel, squid andsea whips.-VNA

Northern region to experience cold spell

Vietnam, Germany promote cooperation in offshore wind development, supply chains

Floods affect over 16,000 homes, nearly 25,000ha of crops

The floods submerged and damaged 22,499ha of rice, crops and vegetables, along with 2,172ha of other crops. A further 1,175.62ha of aquaculture areas were affected. Some 1,999 metres of irrigation canals were eroded or damaged, while 15 schools were flooded.

Heavy rains cause widespread damage in Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa

Prolonged heavy rains from September 13–17 have caused flooding and landslides, damaging homes, crops, roads and infrastructure in Phu Tho and Thanh Hoa provinces, with local authorities mobilising forces for emergency response.

Ninh Binh establishes Kim Bang white-rumped langur conservation area

Covering a total area of 3,182ha, the conservation area comprises 3,016.81ha of natural forest, 64.25ha of plantation forest and 100.94ha of land without forest, with no water surface area. It is located in the Ly Thuong Kiet, Tam Chuc and Nguyen Uy wards of Ninh Binh province.
