Quang Tri (VNA) – The central province of Quang Tri is striving to grow over 42,000ha of forest and attain a certificate from the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) by 2020.
Quang Tri takes the lead in the country in acacia hybrid forestation, with more than 20,340ha. The trees are mainly grown in areas of Ben Hai, with nearly 8,560ha; Road 9 with around 4,870ha; Trieu Hai with over 5,190ha; and the rest is planted by local residents.
Acacia hybrid forests generate incomes of 150-200 million VND per ha in a 10-year cycle, 2-3 times higher than that of traditional acacia trees. The trees also help to cut exploitation and reforestation timing, thus reducing erosion. They also absorb more carbon dioxide, contributing to environmental protection and climate change response.
Quang Tri is home to more than 111,000ha of forest, among which there is 4,000-5,500ha yielding about 600,000sq.m of timber. It has two medium-density fireboard (MDF) factories and 27 others making wooden boards and wood chips, creating 200,000sq.m of product each year.
The wood industry of Quang Tri has enjoyed strong growth, ranking second in the country. The province’s timber products have been shipped to foreign markets, including the US, European countries, Japan, and the Republic of Korea.-VNA
