The Global Road Safety Partnership will help the Vietnam Red Cross Society ( VRC ) enhance its involvement in the making of traffic safety policy, particularly in perfecting the regulations on compulsory use of helmets for motorbike riders.
Under the GRSP-funded project, to be implemented from July until December this year, the VRC will seek to become a member of the National Traffic Safety Committee.
At the same time, VRC will also organise activities such as seminars and media campaigns to promote the implementation of traffic rules.
The project is part of a global project on advocating compulsory traffic safety policy, which has so far been implemented in six countries, including Vietnam and Cambodia .
According to the World Health Organisation, nearly 1.3 million people are killed in traffic accidents and over 50 million injured each year, causing damages worth about 518 billion USD.
In Vietnam, over 17,700 road accidents happened each year in the 2000-2011 period, killing 11,600 people and injuring over 16,000, according to statistics from the National Traffic Safety Committee.-VNA
