Efforts to restart six-party talks on the Korean Peninsula ’s nuclear disarmament must wait until the Republic of Korea (RoK) finds out the causes of the sinking of its warship Cheonan, the RoK’s Foreign Ministry said on May 6.
The ministry said the United States and China -- two of the six parties of the talks -- also agreed upon Seoul ’s decision.
RoK President Lee Myung Bak had previously ordered a multinational probe into the warship sinking, saying this was not a “normal incident”, and vowing to take tough revenges against the perpetrator.
The investigation results are expected to be made public in mid May at the latest.
The RoK Foreign Ministry’s announcement came when the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea ’s leader Kim Jong-Il reportedly expressed readiness to return to the nuclear talks when he met China 's President Hu Jintao in Beijing on May 5.
Warship Cheonan sank following an unexplained explosion on March 26, killing 46 out of the ship’s 104 crew members./.
