Satellite images provide clear picture of greenhouse gas emissions

A research project by the Department of National Remote Sensing under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) has for the first time used images provided by VNREDSat-1, Vietnam’s very first remote sensing satellite, in calculating carbon dioxide emissions.

Hanoi (VNA) – A research project by the Department of National RemoteSensing under the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) has forthe first time used images provided by VNREDSat-1, Vietnam’s very first remotesensing satellite, in calculating carbon dioxide emissions.

Using the VNREDSat-1 imagery and geographic information system (GIS)application, the project completed digital databases on the ecological, soiland climate conditions of the country and the Tay Nguyen Central Highlands, aswell as a database to calculate greenhouse gas emissions, while setting up mapsfor land cover in Tay Nguyen localities and its changes.

High-resolution images provided by VNDREDSat-1 help improve the accuracy ofland-cover mapping, thus improving the reliability of calculation of thegreenhouse gas emissions in different areas.

Director of the Ozone Layer Protection and Low Carbon Economy DevelopmentCentre under the MoNRE’s Climate Change Department Ha Quang Anh said that alongwith creating a giant stride in technology in Vietnam, the project helpspolicy-makers outline effective measures to mitigate indiscriminate miningexploration, and promote environmental protection.

The project showed that changes in forest reserves, biomass, and land uses havegreat impacts on greenhouse gas emissions in energy and agriculture, 20 percentof which is contributed by deforestation and changes in land use.

The Central Highlands, which accounts for 35.7 percent of the country’s forestareas, absorbs 50 percent of the nation’s total carbon dioxide emissions, theproject reveals./.

Northern region to experience cold spell

Vietnam, Germany promote cooperation in offshore wind development, supply chains

Floods affect over 16,000 homes, nearly 25,000ha of crops

The floods submerged and damaged 22,499ha of rice, crops and vegetables, along with 2,172ha of other crops. A further 1,175.62ha of aquaculture areas were affected. Some 1,999 metres of irrigation canals were eroded or damaged, while 15 schools were flooded.

Heavy rains cause widespread damage in Phu Tho, Thanh Hoa

Ninh Binh establishes Kim Bang white-rumped langur conservation area

Covering a total area of 3,182ha, the conservation area comprises 3,016.81ha of natural forest, 64.25ha of plantation forest and 100.94ha of land without forest, with no water surface area. It is located in the Ly Thuong Kiet, Tam Chuc and Nguyen Uy wards of Ninh Binh province.
