Over 50 domestic and foreign scholarsand researchers from various countries including the US, Russia, Canada,Switzerland, Australia, India, the Republic of Korea and thePhilippines, as well as representatives from several ministries,branches and localities nationwide took part in the event.
Speaking at the seminar, Dr. Pham Dang Phuoc, Rector of Pham Van DongUniversity and organiser of the event, said that the seminar aims toclarify the historical and legal foundations of Vietnam’s sovereigntyover the two archipelagos, while creating a chance for participants todiscuss ways to settle disputes in the East Sea to ensure peace,stability and cooperation.
The event is alsoimportant in the context of the complicated situation in the East Seaand China’s establishment of the so-called “Shansha City”,seriously violating Vietnam’s sovereignty over Hoang Sa and TruongSa archipelagos, he said.
Participants at thetwo-day event discuss a wide range of issues, including internationallaw on historical sovereignty, historical evidence and the legal basisVietnam affirms its sovereignty over the archipelagos, measures topeacefully settle current sovereignty disputes and conflicts over thearchipelagos and issues related to the East Sea.
OnApril 28, they are scheduled to visit historical sites connected toVietnam’s sovereignty practices in Hoang Sa and Truong Sa archipelagos,and take part in the “Le Khao le the linh Hoang Sa” ( Hoang Sa SoldierFeast and Commemoration Festival ) on Ly Son island.-VNA
