Singapore (VNA) – Former presidential candidate of Singapore Tan Cheng Bock has applied to form a new political party.
Dr. Tan said he and 11 others, including former People's Action Party (PAP) officials, filed an application to the Registry of Societies to form the new Progress Singapore Party two days ago.
"The decision to go on our own was not an easy one," said Tan in a recent Facebook post, according to Singapore’s The Strait Times.
He and his team had studied various options, and they are waiting approval from the Registry of Societies.
The 78-year-old Tan, who was a member of the Singaporean Parliament for nearly 30 years, had contested the 2011 Presidential Election which he lost to former president Tony Tan Keng Yam by 7,382 votes.
In 2017, he announced his intention to run again, but Tan was not eligible for the election.-VNA
