The Vietnam Union of Friendship Organisations (VUFO) has obtained outstanding results with people-to-people organizations, markedly contributing to the revolutionary cause of the Party and people over the past 60 years.

Truong Tan Sang, Politburo member and standing member of the Secretariat of the Party Central Committee, on behalf of the Party and State leaders, delivered a speech at a ceremony in Hanoi on Nov. 17 to celebrate the 60 th anniversary of VUFO.

Sang said the work of people-to-people relations has made important contributions to successfully implementing foreign policies and goals of the Party and State in the national renewal process and actively contributed to strengthening the peaceful environment, friendship and cooperation between Vietnam and other countries.

Sang took this occasion to express his sincere thanks to foreign organizations and friends for their solidarity and assistance to the Vietnamese people’s national construction and defence.

He stressed that in coming years, work of people to people relations will play a more important role in foreign affairs and national development.

On VUFO’s 60 th anniversary, Sang handed over the Party Central Committee’s laudatory writing, “Active, flexible, creative, effective for national construction and defence and international solidarity” with a hope that VUFO would constantly exert efforts to contribute to expanding the country’s external relations.

VUFO has 56 chapters at the central level, 34 local VUFOs and hundreds of friendship organisations in provinces, cities and central agencies.

Through VUFO, Vietnam has cooperation relations with nearly 800 non-governmental organizations (NGOs) from 30 countries and territories. Over the past 15 years, those foreign NGOs disbursed over 2 billion USD to thousands of projects and programmes on poverty reduction, overcoming war consequences, healthcare, environment and improving capacity for Vietnamese agencies from central to local levels.

Congratulating the proud achievements of VUFO over the past 60 years, Ton van der Velden, Pathfinder country head representative, said that the poverty rate in Vietnam has reduced to below 12 percent and most of millennium development goals (MDGs) have been implemented or are feasible. Development and prosperity were seen clearly, and have benefited from contributions by VUFO.

Ton van der Velden expressed his belief that the foreign NGO community would continue to assist Vietnam in many areas of demand and difficulties./.
