Hanoi (VNA) – “Use products made of recycled materials” and “Act for nature – Our responsibility” are among slogans introduced by the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MoNRE) in response to the World Environment Day (June 5) and Action Month for the Environment 2021 from May 25 to June 25.

There are a total of 19 slogans launched on the occasion of the World Oceans Day (June 8) this year and the Vietnam Sea and Islands Week; and the World Environment Day and Action Month for the Environment, meaning to send a message of green environment and raise public awareness of environmental protection.

This year’s World Oceans Day will have the theme “The Ocean: Life and Livelihoods” with the aim of promoting marine biodiversity and highlighting the importance of oceans to people’s livelihoods and as origin of life of all species on the earth, a representative from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment told VietnamPlus on June 3.

Delivering a similar message, the Vietnam Sea and Islands Week, which is being held between June 1 and 8, sheds a light on the theme of “Protecting the oceans and sustainably develop marine livelihoods in Vietnam.” It is one of the goals set to translate the Government’s master plan and 5-year plan for implementing the Vietnam Marine Economic Sustainable Development Strategy by 2030, with a vision towards 2045.

Nine slogans have been adopted in response to the two events, namely Protecting the seas and islands’ sovereignty is every person’s responsibility and duty; All joining hands for the fatherland’s seas and islands; Hoang Sa and Truong Sa (Paracel and Spratly Islands) always in our hearts; Stay united and actively overcome difficulties to safeguard Vietnam’s marine sovereignty; Green economy for the sustainable development of Vietnam’s seas and islands.

They also include Securing people’s livelihoods for the sustainable growth of Vietnam’s marine economy; Take action for the sustainable development of oceans and marine ecosystems; Sustainably developing the marine economy – no one is left behind; Protecting oceans from plastics is safeguarding our future.

According to the MoNRE, the UN Environment Programme chose “Ecosystem Restoration” as the theme for this year’s World Environment Day, which is a rallying call for the protection and revival of ecosystems around the world for the benefit of people and nature.

Additional ten slogans have been introduced by the ministry to promote the theme, fulfil the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration (2021-2030)’s commitments and encourage activities to reverse the degradation of ecosystems and protect the environment in Vietnam.

They include Living in harmony with nature – Preserving biodiversity; The Earth needs us! Let’s unite against climate change; Prevent and reverse the loss of ecosystems.

The slogans also urge for a number of small changes people can make to create a big impact on the environment, such as Use products made of recycled materials; Harmful fishing practices destroy biological balance; Using green materials is to protect the environment; Pollution comes from use of pesticides, single-use plastics and non-biodegradable plastic bags; Rationally use biological resources; Biodiversity – Life sustaining journey; Act for nature – Our responsibility.

The MoNRE calls on all ministries, governmental agencies, local administrations, organisations and individuals to take initiatives for the restoration of ecosystems in Vietnam, develop a circular economy and sustainably consume and utilise natural resources.

At the local level, measures must be undertaken to put an end to pollution caused by waste; collect waste on banks/shores and surfaces of lakes, streams, rivers and ocean and restore wetland vegetation; sustainably manage fishing activities; and encourage environment protection projects for the benefit of the community./.
