President Mahinda Rajapaksa honoured a Vietnam-Sri Lanka trade forum with his presence at the opening ceremony in Ho Chi Minh City on October 24.

The forum drew almost 100 Vietnamese businesses and 22 major enterprises from Sri Lanka, making it the biggest of its kind between the two countries so far in Vietnam.

The Sri Lankan Minister of Enterprise Development and Investment Promotion, Anura Priyadarshana Yapa, highlighted his Government’s policy to prioritise agriculture, fisheries, seafood processing, rubber production and oil and gas industry.

Sri Lanka is ready to do businesses with Vietnamese enterprises and now is the best time for the two sides to enter into large-scaled and long term cooperation, said the minister.

His view was echoed by fellow colleague, Minister of Foreign Trade and Development, G. L. Peiris, who said Sri Lanka has been well prepared in both high quality human resources and preferential and practical policies on investment and business.

A large number of freshly-liberated land areas in Sri Lanka, which are in need of huge investments for reconstruction and resettlements, as well as a long coastline ideal for fisheries are offering good opportunities for Vietnamese businesses to cash in on, he said.

For his part, Vice Chairman of the HCMC People’s Committee Nguyen Trung Tin called on Sri Lankan enterprises to come and do business or invest in Vietnam.

HCM City itself is an investment attraction with almost 3,000 companies from 60 foreign countries and territories having opened representative offices, he introduced.

Up to September, Vietnam and Sri Lanka have signed eight agreements of cooperation on different fields and set up a joint committee in 2003.

Bilateral trade revenues have constantly grown in the recent past, reaching 61.6 million USD in 2008.

Sri Lanka has received licences for five investment projects with a combined registered capital of 13.2 million USD, ranking 59th out of 88 foreign investors in Vietnam./.
