Nghe An (VNA) – Typhoon Doksuri, said to be the strongest in many years, claimed one life and injured another in the central province of Nghe An, according to preliminary statistics.

The dead was in Nghi Hai ward, Cua Lo town while the injured was in Ky Son commune, Tan Ky district.

Preliminary statistics showed that as of 5:30pm on September 15, the storm blew away roofs of at least 210 houses and four schools as well as inundated 510ha of rice, 1,788ha of corn and vegetables, and 179ha of aquaculture farms in the province.

The heavy downpour raised water level of 307 out of 625 dykes to their full while that of the remaining hit 80-90 percent. Several water reserves risk losing safety due to rising water level in Yen Thanh, Con Cuong and Quynh Luu districts.

Also on September 15, Deputy Prime Minister Trinh Dinh Dung and Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Xuan Cuong inspected recovery efforts in Ky Anh district, the hardest hit locality in the central province of Ha Tinh.

Deputy PM Dung said priority must be given to medicine and food to the people, helping them settle down their lives and restore production.

By 5:00 pm on September 15, nearly 25,000 houses in Ky Anh were unroofed while many public works such as schools, medical stations and cultural houses collapsed; 5,000ha of wooden and fruit trees fell down and 150ha of aquaculture ponds and dykes were damaged.-VNA
