After VinaPhone and Viettel launched their new mobile information services using 3G technology, many other telecom companies have also announced their own plans to provid e this service ahead of schedule, resulting in a new race in the Vietnamese telecoms market.

On October 12, VinaPhone officially launched its own 3G network with six new services, including Mobile Internet, Mobile Broadband, Video Call, Mobile Camera, Mobile TV and 3G Portal.

VinaPhone Director Lam Hoang Vinh said that the same basic charges for the current 2G network are also applied to 3G customers. In addition, the Mobile TV and Mobile Internet services are offered on both the 2G and 3G networks at very attractive charges, he added.

The VinaPhone 3G network currently covers 13 provinces and cities and the company plans to expand it nationwide by 2010.

Earlier, the military-run mobile service operator Viettel also launched a trial run of 3G services in Ho Chi Minh City from October 10-15 after conducting test runs in Hanoi .

Viettel will officially provide its 3G services in December this year instead of June 2010 as expected. The company has invested 12 trillion VND (649 million USD) in building up its infrastructure in an effort to bring 3G services to 90 percent of the country’s population. It also plans to design packages for customers based on their demands in order to ensure the most competitive prices.

With this announcement by the nation’s two biggest operators, MobiFone is preparing a programme to provide free 3G trial services for around 300,000 customers a month before its official launch this December. The company’s 3G network is expected to cover all populous urban areas in 63 provinces and cities nationwide.

EVN Telecom has also announced that it will provide 3G services in April 2010, two months ahead of schedule.

According to telecoms experts, the deployment of the 3G service will not only increase profits for service operators but also make it more convenient for mobile subscribers, especially people in rural and remote areas to access high-speed internet services.

In addition, the charges for value added services will drop by 10-15 times compared to those for current GPRS internet services.

According to the International Telecoms Union, Vietnam has enjoyed one of the world’s highest telecom growth rates in the world in recent years. Vietnam now has 8 mobile service providers, including MobiFone, VinaPhone, Viettel, S-Fone, EVN Telecom, VietnamMobile, GtelMobile and Indochina Telecom.

By the end of September 2009, there were over 96 million mobile subscribers nationwide. Viettel leads other mobile service providers in the number of subscribers with more than 30 million, followed by MobiFone and VinaFone./.
