Nguyen Duc Trung, deputy head of ICQCD, said at a conference on management and development of BTS last week that a large number of stations had not been tested to see if they met set standards.

He said that there were 42,000 BTS nationwide erected by six telecom companies – Vinaphone, Mobifone, Viettel, S-fone, EVE Telecom and Vietnamobile – but only 26,000 had been tested and certified. Tran Ngoc Tiep, deputy chief inspector chief at the MIC, said a BTS must meet a few key technical specifications, including the intensity of electromagnetic field and safety measures against lightning.

The intensity of electromagnetic field must be within limits set by the MIC (2W/m2) to ensure the health of people living in the vicinity of the BTS, he said.
Nguyen Tien Sy, head of the post and communications section at the Hanoi Information and Communications Department, said that as of November 2009, the city had 3,700 BTS in operation but only 2,020 had been tested./.
