A helicopter carrying a deputy regional army commander and eight other officers crashed in northern Thailand on November 17, killing all those aboard, according to the English-language newspaper Bangkok Post.

The chopper crashed 10 minutes after taking off from an army camp in Phayao province, about 590 km north of Bangkok, deputy army spokeswoman Sirichan Ngathong said.

Among the victims was Maj. Gen. Songphol Thongjeen, the newly promoted deputy commander of Thailand's northern army region.

The officers on the helicopter had finished an inspection mission in Phayao and were heading to an army base in another province.-VNA
