Bangkok (VNA) – Thai Prime Minister Paetongtarn Shinawatra has called for stronger ASEAN collaboration to combat online scams, tackle misinformation, and promote ethical use of artificial intelligence (AI).
Speaking at the opening of the 5th ASEAN Digital Ministers’ Meeting (ADGMIN) in Bangkok on January 16, she emphasised the need for members of the Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to work together to build a sustainable digital economy that benefits all sectors, while uniting against the growing threat of online fraud.
The PM welcomed representatives from ASEAN member states to Thailand and emphasised the importance of collaboration in developing a secure, sustainable, and inclusive digital economy for the region.
She noted that the start of a new year presents an excellent opportunity for ASEAN members to exchange views and experiences.
On this occasion, the PM highlighted three key roles in shaping the digital future of the ASEAN region.
First is combating online scams. The PM expressed concern about the growing threat of online scams, which pose serious risks to the public. Addressing this issue requires regional cooperation to ensure digital security and rebuild public trust in the online space.
Second is tackling misinformation. The PM acknowledged the challenges posed by fake news and misinformation, which undermine societal confidence. She proposed that ASEAN strengthen mechanisms for monitoring and controlling online information while emphasising the importance of promoting digital literacy among the public. This will empower individuals to use the internet safely and responsibly.
Third is harnessing artificial intelligence (AI). The PM urged ASEAN to adopt AI technology in an inclusive and responsible manner, ensuring its potential is fully leveraged for the benefit of the region.
The meeting underscored Thailand’s commitment to fostering regional collaboration in digital innovation, security, and inclusivity, aiming to build a safer and more prosperous digital future for ASEAN./.
