The Thai Interior Ministry has launched activities for the World Day Remembrance of Road Traffic Victims, with the aim at reducing the rate of fatalities in road accidents, according to Thai media.

The Thai government has been trying to decrease the death toll from road accidents to under 10 from a population of 100,000, a PBS TV bulletin quoted Minister Anupong Paochinda, acting executive director of the Road Safety Directing Centre, as saying.

Thailand saw about 44,000 fatalities from road accidents each year while many more were injured or maimed. The campaign to reduce road accidents this year will focus on traffic management, safe driving, and accident response with a view to making drivers more aware of the damage and pain caused by road accidents.

Thailand is among nations recording highest road traffic deaths worldwide, with 38.1 road fatalities per 100,000 people per year, and 118.8 deaths per 100,000 motor vehicles.-VNA
