Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand’s Livestock Development Department said all pigs and carcasses from Laos will be banned from entering Thailand in 90 days amid growing concern about African swine fever (ASF).

The decision was issued on June 21, after Laos confirmed its first AFS-infected cases. Infections in the Lao southern province of Saravane province have so far killed 973 animals.

Thailand’s move followed a similar ban by China the same day.

The disease has plagued China and Vietnam, leading to the culling of millions of pigs.

The trans-boundary animal disease can be spread by live or dead pigs but it poses no threats to humans. There is no vaccine against the fever.-VNA
