Thailand ’s Prime Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, said on May 30 that the country has got back to normal after the government lifted a curfew, imposed in the wake of a series of anti-government protests.

PM Abhisit decided to lift the curfew on May 29 but said that the state of emergency was still necessary, two months after the mass rallies held by the red-shirts that paralysed the capital and claimed almost 90 lives.

In his weekly television address, on the first night the curfew was lifted, he said that the situation appeared to be getting back to normal, but the authorities were still keeping a close watch on the country’s security situation before considering lifting the state of emergency, which was imposed in Bangkok and its surrounding provinces and cities early last month.

Regarding national conciliation, the Thai PM stated that the situation could only be resolved through the democratic process.

He pledged to invite representatives from every corner of the country to gather ideas from the public about a suitable way towards reconciliation and measures to reduce social inequalities.

The government will also set up an independent committee to investigate the campaign to suppress the demonstrations by the anti- government United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship (UDD) in Bangkok on May 19, he added.

Abisit will face a no confidence debate in parliament on May 31 as opposition parties plan to press him over the measures used to disperse
the red-shirt supporters and allegations that his Democratic Party received illegal campaign donations in 2005./.
