Thailand orders security reviews ahead of 35th ASEAN Summit

(Photo: NST)Bangkok (VNA) – Thai Deputy Prime Minister Prawit Wongsuwon has ordered a comprehensive review of all security procedures in preparation for the upcoming 35th ASEAN summit, according to Defence Ministry spokesman Kongcheep Tantravanich.
Lt. Gen. Kongcheep said Deputy PM Prawit, who oversees national security, has instructed relevant agencies to review security plans for the three-day summit, which will start on November 2.
The agencies have been told to be on the lookout for any developing situations and work to ensure that security measures are enforced in compliance with international standards, he said.
He added that intelligence operations will be stepped up in order to head off any situation which could disrupt the high-level meeting.
Related agencies, including the Interior Ministry, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration, and the Royal Thai Police, will check closed-circuit cameras in public areas across Bangkok and surrounding provinces to ensure they are in working order.
Security operations will also be integrated for the effective screening of people passing through border checkpoints, the spokesman said.
Deputy national police chief Suwat Chaengyotsuk earlier said that over 10,000 police officers will be deployed to secure the summit as it is the year's final meeting of regional leaders./.
