Bangkok (VNA) – Thailand will hold a general election in 2019 as scheduled, said Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence of Thailand Prawit Wongsuwan.
Speaking to reporters in Bangkok, the Thai Deputy PM said the government is still planning to hold the election on February 24.
The Thai government has promised to hold an election between February and May 2019, following repeated delays due to constitutional and legislative steps issues ahead of a vote.
After the coup in May 2014, the National Council for Peace and Order of Thailand announced various dates for the general election. However, it has been postponed several times.
The Election Commission of Thailand (EC) has announced that the country’s general election roadmap will last from December 11, 2018 to May 9, 2019.
However, the election date will be only officially announced after the government completely lifts the political party ban.
In September, Thailand promulgated laws on the election of members of the House of Representatives and senators.-VNA
