Thanh Hoa strictly monitors vessels to fight IUU fishing

Since 2017, the central coastal province of Thanh Hoa has reported no fishing vessel encroaching on foreign waters or conducting illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, thanks to its efforts to closely manage and monitor its fleet.

Thanh Hoa (VNA) – Since 2017, the central coastal province of Thanh Hoahas reported no fishing vessel encroaching on foreign waters or conductingillegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing, thanks to its efforts toclosely manage and monitor its fleet.

According to the provincial Department of Agriculture andRural Development, to date, the province has added data of 2,493 fishingvessels to the national fishery database system Vnfishbase to unify operation, andserve collection, examination and management. It has also installed andoperated the vessel monitoring system (VMS) on 1,121 out of 1,144 fishing vessels,equal to 98%.

Determining that the fight against IUU fishing is an important task, theStanding Board of the provincial Party Committee, and the provincial People'sCommittee have issued many documents directing the prevention and control ofIUU fishing, with focus on strictly implementing the European Commission’srecommendations against IUU fishing related to controlling fishing vessels toprevent them from encroaching on foreign waters, and promoting traceability ofproducts from fishing.

The provincial Department of Agriculture and RuralDevelopment has organised working delegations to coordinate with the People'sCommittees of coastal localities and border guards to review and verify fishingvessels, especially those that have their registration and fishing licensesexpired, and are yet to install the VMS.

In addition, relevant forces in coastal localities such asHau Loc, Hoang Hoa and Quang Xuong districts, Sam Son city, and Nghi Son town havestepped up disseminations to remind vessel owners and captains of not encroachingon foreign waters, and staying contacted.

Thanh Hoa province has also strictly punished violationsrelated to IUU fishing. In the first five months of 2023, the province has handled45 cases of administrative violations in the field of fishing with a total fineof 437 million VND (18,600 USD)./.

Prime Minister meets Vietnamese community in Algeria

Government pushes stronger data integration to tighten IUU fishing controls

According to the MAE, as of November 15, a total of 79,360 fishing vessels nationwide had been registered and updated in the national fisheries database (VNFishbase), reaching 100%. The number of licensed vessels stands at 76,811. Vessels found ineligible for operation have been placed under local supervision, with commune- and ward-level authorities assigned to manage their mooring.

Japan’s Nihon Denpa News licenced to reopen office in Vietnam
