Tra Vinh (VNA) – Tieu Can district has become the first district-level locality in the Mekong Delta province of Tra Vinh to be recognised as a new-style rural area.
A ceremony was held on April 29 to announce the Prime Minister’s decision on the recognition.
Chairman of the Tieu Can People’s Committee Tran Hoang Khai said the district has nine communes and two townships with a population of more than 112,000, about 31 percent of whom are Khmer ethnics. Agriculture forms the largest part of the local economy.
Implementing the national target programme on new-style rural area building, Tieu Can district has gained a facelift when all roads linking communes and hamlets have been paved with asphalt or concrete, and the irrigation system has been upgraded to better serve agricultural activities. Up to 98 percent of local households have accessed electricity and clean water.
Per capita income in the district reached 42.1 million VND (over 1,800 USD) in 2018, up 2.5-fold from 2011 – when the national target programme began. The household poverty rate was brought down to 2.31 percent last year, dropping by 18.9 percent from 2011.
At the ceremony, Chairman of the Tra Vinh People’s Committee Dong Van Lam said over the last eight years, the province has obtained many encouraging outcomes in building new-style countryside.
By the end of 2018, 40 of the 85 communes in Tra Vinh had been recognised as new-style rural areas, and two of the nine district-level localities had earned the status.
The national target programme on new-style rural area building, launched in 2010, sets 20 criteria aiming to boost the development of rural areas across Vietnam.
According to the central coordination office for the programme, Vietnam will complete the programme’s target for 2016-2020 by the end of the second quarter of 2019, with at least half of all communes completing all criteria.
About 46.48 percent or 4,144 of all communes have been recognised as new-style rural areas. In addition, 61 districts have won the title.-VNA
