Hanoi (VNA) – The southern hub of Ho Chi Minh City and the Central Highlands province of Lam Dong on May 17 launched tree planting campaigns in celebration of the 130th birth anniversary of late President Ho Chi Minh (May 19).

Authorities and people in HCM City held tree planting activities across 24 districts on the day. In 2019, the city planted over 400,000 trees.

Meanwhile, Lam Dong province planted 1,500 pines and wild Himalayan cherry trees at the campus sites of some universities.

President Ho Chi Minh was born on May 19, 1890 in Kim Lien commune, Nam Dan district, the north-central province of Nghe An. He devoted his life to the national liberation cause, while tirelessly striving for peace and progress in the world.

He also led the nation to success in the struggle for national independence and establishing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam following the August Revolution in 1945.

On November 28, 1959, President Ho Chi Minh wrote an article which was published on Nhan dan (People) newspaper, stressing the significance of tree planting to each person, family and the entire nation. It has since become an annual festival of the Vietnamese at the beginning of each Lunar New Year.

The President passed away in 1969./.
