Northern Dien Bien province’s authorities on May 7 paid tribute to heroes and martyrs fallen in the battles against French colonialists in Dien Bien Phu on the occasion of the 59 th anniversary of the Dien Bien Phu Victory.
The martyrs were laid to rest at the Doc Lap ( Independence ) Cemetery, Thanh Nua commune, Dien Bien district.
The same day, the delegation paid tribute and offered incense in memory of heroic martyrs in cemeteries A1, Tong Khao and Him Lam.
Dien Bien has three national cemeteries and several provincial cemeteries, where more than 8,000 martyrs in the resistance wars against French colonialists and US imperialists were laid to rest.
On December 6, 1953, in Phu Dinh commune, Dinh Hoa district, President Ho Chi Minh chaired a Politburo meeting approving the strategic plan to attack French colonialists during the Winter-Spring of 1954.
The attack ended with the historic Dien Bien Phu victory in May 1954, which became a global event that surprised the whole world and helped end the Vietnamese nation’s nine-year war of resistance against the French colonialists.
The Dien Bien Phu victory is also closely attached to the name of General Vo Nguyen Giap, who was the Commander-in-Chief of the Dien Bien Phu Campaign.-VNA
