A grand meeting was held in Tan Trao commune, Son Duong district, the northern mountainous province of Tuyen Quang on August 16 to mark the 70th anniversary of the Tan Trao Congress of People’s Representatives chaired by President Ho Chi Minh to decide the destiny of the nation.

During the congress—organised from August 16-17, 1945 and attended by 60 representatives from the north, central and southern regions—the order for general insurrection was issued to the entire nation to seize power.

Addressing the modern-day meeting, National Assembly Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung said the Tan Trao Congress was a historical revolutionary event, reflecting the strong mind and spirit of solidarity among the entire nation at the moment decisive for the nation’s fate.

The event was also evidence of the determination to eliminate colonial and feudal regimes, laying the first legal foundation for the new administration, he said.

The NA leader described the congress as a great success of the Party and President Ho Chi Minh in seizing the opportunity to overtake the administration.

Basing on decisions made during the congress, the Vietnamese people rose up for the complete victory of the August Revolution in 1945. Later on September 2 of the same year, President Ho Chi Minh delivered the declaration of independence in Hanoi ’s Ba Dinh Square , introducing the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.

Chairman Nguyen Sinh Hung stated that throughout the 13 tenures of the NA since the Tan Trao Congress nearly 70 years ago, the legislative body has renovated its operations to meet the demands of varying periods of revolution.

As a supreme body representing the people, the NA has since then passed five Constitutions, making decisions on major national issues, meeting the people’s aspirations and contributing to reinforcing people’s trust in the Party and State, he said.

The NA Chairman emphasised that the Tan Trao congress is an everlasting invaluable historic lesson that can be applied in the national renovation as well as current improvements of NA operations.

Following the meeting, the NA chairman and many incumbent and former State and NA leaders visited a number of revolutionary families in Son Duong commune where President Ho Chi Minh and General Vo Nguyen Giap stayed during the August Revolution.-VNA
