UN backs Vietnam’s efforts to promote human rights

She made thepledge at a ceremony in Hanoi on December 3 to release Vietnam’snational report on human rights for the second review under the UnitedNations Human Rights Council (UNHCR)’s Universal Periodic Reviewmechanism.

Mehta said as a UNHCR member, Vietnam hascommitted to the highest standards of human rights protection andpromotion.

Addressing the event, Director General of theForeign Ministry’s Department of International Organisations Hoang ChiTrung said Vietnam’s successful election to the UNHCR with anoverwhelming majority reflects the fact that the international communityhas acknowledged Vietnam’s achievements in its renewal cause andhuman rights protection.

It is also a success in the country’sexternal activities, improving its prestige and status in theinternational arena, Trung noted.

He added that Vietnam,as a member of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), theNon-Aligned Movement, the Francophone community and other regional andglobal bodies, will work to push the UNHCR’s activities forward, thanksto its relevant past experiences.

Compiled by theGovernment and National Assembly bodies since late 2012, the reportcomprises 85 articles, featuring an overview of the human rightssituation in Vietnam since the previous review, and its relevantpriorities and commitments.

Vietnam will submit the report to the UNHCR in January 2014.-VNA
