The United States has offered a 57,000 USD assistance package to help Vietnam quickly respond to potential new outbreaks of avian or H1N1 influenza.

The US Embassy said in its press release on May 27 that the assistance package includes 4,000 sets of personal protective equipment and 100 boxes of biodegradable powder, which is enough to produce over 20,000 litres of disinfectant.

The package is to be distributed to veterinary departments in 10 provinces throughout the country which are most at risk of bird flu or in greatest need of the supplies, including Can Tho, Ha Nam, Hau Giang, Hung Yen, Kien Giang, Quang Binh, Quang Ngai, Quang Tri, Thai Nguyen and Tra Vinh.

The assistance is implemented by the US Agency for International Development (USAID) with technical support from the UN Food and Agricultural Organisation.

Since 2005, the US government has provided more than 33.5 million USD to support Vietnam’s programmes to combat avian influenza, said the US Embassy in Vietnam./.
