Ambassador Quy made the affirmation in an interview granted to the Vietnam News Agency on January 31 when Vietnam ended its term as rotary president of the UNSC at the beginning of its tenure as a non-permanent member of the UNSC,
He said Vietnam took the occasion of its presidency to propose the theme on the 75th anniversary of the UN Charter, thus raising the awareness of the entire UN system and member states about the Charter’s importance to global peace and security.
As ASEAN Chair in 2020 and UNSC President for January 2020, the country has also been able to highlight the importance of cooperation between the UN and regional and sub-regional organisations, in which ASEAN was made an exemplary model, he said.

He said Vietnam began its presidency month with an open debate with the participation of 109 countries, the largest number so far, and 111 speakers, and concluded the month with the event on ASEAN – UN cooperation. Quy described the event as an open ending with a message that Vietnam wants closer coordination within the UN, and between the UN and regional organisations to enhance the role of the UN Charter, the rule of law and the protection of global peace and security.

Regarding Vietnam’s priorities in the remaining time of its non-permanent membership of the UNSC, Ambassador Quy said Vietnam must make further contributions to the UNSC and make preparations for April 2021 when Vietnam will again assume the role of UNSC President./.
