New York (VNA) – Vietnam has been actively participating in theUnited Nations (UN)’ peacekeeping operations and a responsible member of theinternational community, said Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Head of Vietnam’sPermanent Mission to the UN.
Speaking at the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (Committee Four)of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly, Ambassador Ngastressed on the need to improve peacekeeping activities to ensure prompt,timely and effective response to changing situations.
Vietnam lauds the UN Secretary General’s recommendations on restructuring the UN’speace and security pillar as well as the UN’s efforts in allocating resourcesto prevent conflicts and building peace, she said.
Nga also highlighted that peacekeeping activities must be carried out in linewith international regulations and the UN’s Charter as well as respect fornational territory, non-interference in internal affairs, non-use of force, andgetting approval of sides concerned.
Vietnam is making preparation for launching the second-level field hospital inSouth Sudan in accordance with the UN’s standards, Nga said, adding that thecountry is sending the first female security officer to join peacekeepingactivities in the African nation.
At the meeting, the involved countries agreed that peacekeeping is an essentialtool to maintain international peace and security. The UN’s peacekeepingoperations have positive impacts on disputed areas worldwide. As they arefacing complicated challenges, countries welcome initiatives to improveefficiency and optimise resources in implementing peacekeeping missions.
They affirmed that diplomatic tools, intermediation, conciliation and politicalmeasures will continue to be the UN’s priorities in the coming time.-VNA
