New York (VNA) – Vietnam has been actively participating in the United Nations (UN)’ peacekeeping operations and a responsible member of the international community, said Ambassador Nguyen Phuong Nga, Head of Vietnam’s Permanent Mission to the UN.

Speaking at the Special Political and Decolonisation Committee (Committee Four) of the 72nd Session of the UN General Assembly, Ambassador Nga stressed on the need to improve peacekeeping activities to ensure prompt, timely and effective response to changing situations.

Vietnam lauds the UN Secretary General’s recommendations on restructuring the UN’s peace and security pillar as well as the UN’s efforts in allocating resources to prevent conflicts and building peace, she said.

Nga also highlighted that peacekeeping activities must be carried out in line with international regulations and the UN’s Charter as well as respect for national territory, non-interference in internal affairs, non-use of force, and getting approval of sides concerned.

Vietnam is making preparation for launching the second-level field hospital in South Sudan in accordance with the UN’s standards, Nga said, adding that the country is sending the first female security officer to join peacekeeping activities in the African nation.

At the meeting, the involved countries agreed that peacekeeping is an essential tool to maintain international peace and security. The UN’s peacekeeping operations have positive impacts on disputed areas worldwide. As they are facing complicated challenges, countries welcome initiatives to improve efficiency and optimise resources in implementing peacekeeping missions.

They affirmed that diplomatic tools, intermediation, conciliation and political measures will continue to be the UN’s priorities in the coming time.-VNA
