Havana (VNA) – Vietnam and Cuba discussedways to make their special ties more practical and effective with the focus onpromising sectors such as economics, trade, investment, construction,agriculture, aquaculture and green energy.

It was among key points Deputy Prime Minister andForeign Minister Pham Binh Minh and Cuban FM Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla exchangedduring their talks in Havana on March 29 on the sidelines of GeneralSecretary of the Communist Party ofVietnam (CPV) Nguyen Phu Trong’s State visit toCuba from March 28-31.

Minh highly spoke of theclose Vietnam-Cuba relations which have been strengthened through regularexchanges of visit at all levels in multiple fields.

The bilateral ties ineconomics and trade have grown steadily, he said, noting that the two-way trademounted to 240 million USD in 2017 and the two sides have maintained effectivebilateral cooperation mechanisms with close links at internationalorganisations and multilateral forums.

Bruno Rodriguez Parrilla, for his part, said he wants both sides tocontinue close coordination to boost their bilateral and multilateral relationsin the time ahead.

He expressed his support for the fifth political consultation between the twoforeign ministries to take place this year and vowed to closely work with theVietnamese Ministry of Foreign Affairs to organize celebrations of the 45th anniversary of Cuban Leader Fidel Castro’s historic visit to a newly-liberatedarea in Quang Tri in 1973.

The two sides said theyare ready to work together in the implementation of agreements reached duringthis visit. They later exchanged views on regional and international issues ofmutual interest and agreed on the importance to settle territorial disputes viapeaceful means, without use of force or threat to use force, with respect fordiplomatic and legal processes, in line with international laws and related UNconventions.

NA Standing Committee discusses continued VAT reduction

The Government proposed a two-percentage-point reduction in VAT - from 10% to 8% - on goods and services currently subject to the 10% rate. This excludes certain sectors such as telecommunications, finance, banking, securities, insurance, real estate, metals, mineral products (excluding coal), and goods and services subject to special consumption tax (excluding petrol). The proposed timeframe for the reduction is from July 1, 2025 to December 31, 2026.

Vietnam, Laos push toward effective, sustainable trade relations

In the first quarter of 2025, Vietnam-Laos trade reached 980.1 million USD, a surge of 105.5% compared to the same period in 2024. Exports from Vietnam valued at 346.4 million USD, representing soaring 138.6%. Meanwhile, imports from Laos rose by 91.1% to 633.6 million USD.
